Positive Parenting Tips
In order to become a good parent it’s not all about setting rules and assigning chores. Instead, you need to take an active role in making your home a supportive environment for your children so they can grow in a healthy manner and pursue their interests. These is especially important as they grow into their teens and rule setting becomes less important than creating proper habits and activities that will guide them away from negative decisions. You as the parent need to be both a rule-setter and also an enabler at the same time in a positive manner. Here are a few positive parenting tips to help you get started.
First – listen to your children. Most kids have no trouble talking about themselves. They often talk so much that as a parent you can filter them out of your thoughts. However, in their daily talk you’ll find that they’ll address their interests and problems in subtle less direct ways. It’s at these points that you need to be able to interact with these interests to let them know you are there for them. It may take some time to figure out what they are really interested in and what is just passing excitement.
Second – talk back. Talk with your children like they’re people instead of like they’re your kids. This is helpful to get them to speak better and it also sets them up to be able to talk to talk with other adults elsewhere in the world. This increases their maturity and gives children a sense of confidence and value when adults take them seriously and it starts with you just talking with them on day-to-day stuff. This doesn’t have to be a big deal, just random talk, but down the road it will really pay off.
Third – set up healthy habits rather than rules. There’s a lot a child needs to learn and do to simply be healthy and maintain themselves. It’s a lot to learn and it never stops. Instead of presenting things like hygiene in terms of strict rules, try to get them in the habit of doing these things by doing them together and demonstrating the proper habits as one. The same goes for homework and other activities. Don’t generate a list of rules to set behavior, try and generate habits so the behavior is automatic.
This won’t be easy and it will require a lot of patience on your hand, but the healthiness of your children in the future will be a huge reward for your troubles, which may in fact be bonuses to your own life.
